avoid the flourish

always the comment from anyone who used to teach me anything: avoid the flourish, make the art, stand aside. in ballet, i liked to break my wrist lines in arabesques, i found it more tragic, more dying swan. the teacher once singled me out in class and said i would be a lovely dancer if only i could remember to make neat, straight lines, as if it were something i was forgetting. as if it wasn't a choice.

watching myself play piano here, something i've never been able to do until today, i totally see the flourish, the flowers, the drama. it's embarrassing on the one hand but on the other, it is me and i don't have to get 95 plus percent on playing for myself or for you. if i like things tragic or uneven i can have them that way. i can do what i want as long as i'm happy with it. as long as i'm happy with it...
